Managed Care Nursing
Career Resources
Managed Care is a structured system which manages healthcare delivery
to control costs and provide effective monitored health care. Through a
managed program (such as an HMO or a PPO), physicians accept constraints
on the amount charged for medical care and patients are given a choice
of physicians from preauthorized lists of health care providers.
A managed care nurse is responsible for the coordination and administration
of managed health care programs. Nursing skills and knowledge are applied
to ensure common health problems and needs are addressed by the structure
of managed care programming. A managed care nurse typically functions
in an administrative or clinic setting. Managed Care nursing is practiced
by nurses who have formal, post-secondary education and may have additional
training in public health.
